Best Tomb Raider
I can’t say how glad I am this game got put on the app store, it’s probably a top 5 game for me. While it lacks in cinematics and music (you can get away with playing from your personal music stash), the rest is a valuable relic worth hunting down. I can’t stress enough, level design, level design, LEVEL DESIGN. So many games these days and even the more recent releases of the TR franchise have lost this timeless art and for me, that alone can make or break the whole deal for me. There’s no point in playing a game on rails or that tells you -exactly- where you need to go, because then it’s just glorified ‘Simon Says’ with few real obstacles, repetitive gameplay, and fight sequences that don’t feel organic. This game has you climbing over every wall, using every ability at your disposal, and every last level has a unique ‘flavor’ to it that you’re practically never doing the same thing twice. Even when you revisit certain rooms, you’re still doing something different within it. That and gameplay are among my favorite elements. And gameplay here feels incredibly fluid and enjoyable- Lara is a great deal more responsive than in the old Playstation games. Graphics might feel a little dated for those with the latest gen consoles, but I still feel scenery is gorgeous, and elegantly captured in every location. It looks very natural and fitting. Not to mention lower hardware requirements. This release can easily maintain a buttery 60 frames on 13” MB Pros with settings cranked almost to max. Highly recommended for the sake of pure fun.
